Popular Woodworking’s Weekend Pot Rack

If I wasn’t for woodworking, my favorite hobby would have to be cooking. And, just as in your workshop, having your tools in an easy-to-access, organized fashion helps ensure your cooking experience is a great one.

The potrack

This plan, designed and built by Popular Woodworking’s Megan Fitzpatrick, is an easy to build organizer that keeps those pots, pans and sauciers in a handy, easy to access location. The best part? You can build it on Saturday and be cooking with it on Sunday.

Bon appétit!

The Design Confidential’s Chesapeake chaise lounge

So, anyone tired of winter yet? Word on the street in Boston is that we are just about – if not at – the snowiest winter on record. Cheer up, however, because I am assured that at some time in the future, spring will actually arrive, and the snow will be gone.

A chaise built from the plans

Since y’all are waiting for that magical day, why not take the time to build a piece of furniture that will see some heavy use once the temperatures rise? This simple chaise lounge can be built from home center cedar to resist the ravages of weather while providing a comfortable place to chill out during those warm summer days.

Fine Woodworking’s Cherry Chest of Drawers

OK, it’s the first day after Get Woodworking Week 2015, and after the huge after party, I had to nurse one wicked hangover.

Just kidding.

However, yes, this plan is a little late, but it’s a good one for those of us who may have – ahem – bought several chests of drawers from the giant Swedish furniture importers to only watch our children bust them up by trying to jam every single t-shirt they own into them.

drawersThis bombproof plan, brought to us by Christian Becksvoort of Fine Woodworking should not only outlast the Scandinavian pressboard, but should be able to be handed down through generations.

Oh, and as you might imagine, a few more Get Woodworking Week articles appeared in my inbox, so be sure to check these babies out!

Spokane Audubon Society’s birdhouse plans

Fire the canons!  Alert the media! Today is the start of Get Woodworking Week 2015!

Since the vast majority of woodworkers get started building bird houses, why not get plans from the experts?  This page, offered by the Audubon Society of Spokane, has downloadable plans for different species of birds. By building these simple plans, even the beginning woodworker can start to build the skills necessary to tackle any woodworking project.

A snazzy looking useful birdhouse

Oh, you didn’t realize that different bird species need different size houses? You see, we’re already learning things this week!

We are also starting to get in some articles from around the web in celebration of Get Woodworking Week. Here are just a few to get started.

Sean Rubino also got into the act with a video on a furniture repair that can be handled with some basic woodworking know-how.

Remember, if you write about Get Woodworking Week, be sure to let my trained shop monkey know at iggy@tomsworkbench.com, and I’ll be sure to list them.

Frameless wall cabinets

OK, I have to admit that for me building cabinets is fun. Working with large sheets of plywood makes the construction go quickly, and before you know it, you have completed a pretty sweet looking piece of work.

Frameless wall cabinets

The bed I am finishing up was my first foray into European style frameless cabinetry. Unlike North American face frame cabinets, these projects go together quickly, don’t get involved in time-consuming face frame construction and are as strong and as nice to look at as their face framed cousins.

So, how do you build them? Well, today’s plan from some other guy named Tom (honestly, he didn’t list his last name!) shows how to build the frameless uppers. He also has a great tutorial on building frameless base cabinets as well.

If you are interested in learning about this cabinet construction method, this is a pretty sweet place to start.

The Drunken Woodworker’s beer caddy

So, I hear there may be some kind of big football game on today… and I hear that this game – more than any other – may require some tasty snacks and a few adult beverages.

David's Beer Caddy

Well, if you are going to watch the game in style, there’s nothing more awesome than bringing those adult beverages to the celebration in a hand-crafted beer tote. This plan by David Picciuto, the Drunken Woodworker, allows you to build an awesome tote for your favorite beverages and show off your woodworking skill.

So, I would recommend you get out to the shop ASAP so you will have yours read for kickoff!

Woodgears’ Ski Rack Plan

I’m back!  Did you miss me?

Steamboat Springs

So, here’s where I was for the better part of a week. Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for a weather summit. I know, it was kind of odd to be someplace 7,000 feet above sea level and in temperatures as cold as -5 degrees Fahrenheit talking about hurricanes, but hey, it was pretty darned cool!

So, while I was away, I tried my hand at skiing. And, I am pleased to report that I returned home with two intact knees, making it that much sweeter!  I also came back to Florida with an appreciation for how much stuff it takes to participate in outdoor winter sports.

The Ski Rack

So, this week, I’m linking to Woodgears’ Ski Rack plan, for those of you who pursue the Alpine or Nordic flavors of this outside sport. It’s a great place to store and organize the skis, poles, wax, boots and million other accessories that are required to pursue this popular winter pastime.
