On my blog, I recently posted a specific experience with a retailer who kindly directed me towards a wood that I later found is threatened. A lot of this is about personal empowerment and understanding the ramifications of what we're doing. Thanks for helping to keep the realities in people's heads.

Incidentally, when I called the dealer about this wood the guy literally snapped at me: "We don't want to go out of business next week, so we only deal with reputable companies..." I'm thinking "like Dole in Hawaii right?"

I'm looking for another local dealer.

No, Mark, I hadn't seen that... I like the story of finding those logs that have sunk and are later recovered.

Thanks for posting this Tom. I saw a stat that 80% of the old growth forests are gone worldwide...Kind of scary. Did you see the artcile in Pop woodworking about harvesting the old maghoney from rivers in South America?

That's a mouthful of truth Tom.Thanks for reminding us.
I try my best to use every stick of wood to the fullest and not waste anything.
It takes a long time to grow a tree big enough to harvest and we should remember that the younger woodworkers need a good supply and so on.

This is a big reason I use local hardwoods, and not "exotics".
