Having spent many years in sales and management, I often wonder if one of the major failures of our society was when we began to place the salesman, bean counter, or manager in a higher level of respect than the person who produced the product. Somewhere our priorities became misaligned.

Even though I have an advanced degree and have been involved in biological research my whole career, I took all the "shop" classes I could in middle and high school. I couldn't agree with you and the author more. Skilled (and I emphasize the word SKILLED) tradespeople are equally as important as good scientists, lawyers, doctors etc. and need to be given the respect and compensation they deserve.
